This challenging project included multiple heavy lifts and some of New Zealand's largest lifts. DSI utilised Liebherr LR1400 400-ton and LR1280 280-ton crawlers, including 20 no. Units of cranes, personnel access booms and telehandlers during this project. All project works completed safely, on time, and within budget.
This is the second time Daniel Smith Industries have won this award - The Greymouth River Rail Bridge project in 2007 also achieved first place. The 2011 Project Article featured in the Contractor Magazine August 2011.
Crane Update:
DSI also announce to customers that we continue our investment in updating fleet with new cranes having recently purchased 2 x NEW Liebherr crawler cranes LR1280 (280-ton) and LR1300W (300-ton) both cranes dedicated to Project Hay Point, Queensland, Australia.
In Western Australia, DSI team have been busy with crawler cranes Liebherr LR1750 (750-ton), 2 no. Kobelco SL6000 (600-ton) and 1 no. Kobelco CKE2500 (250-ton) being relocated from BHP Project to the McConnell Dowell FMG RGP-3 project at Port Hedland.
In New Zealand, DSI cranes are busy working from Bluff through to Auckland. Christchurch Earthquake works are busy with Liebherr LR1400 and LR1280 crawlers at Lyttelton Port. Kobelco CKE2500 is rigged with 61 metres main boom and 61 metres luffing boom = 120 metres hook height and working on the dismantle of the leaning Hotel Grand Chancellor.
Our fleet of 100 to 250 ton crawlers are busy at Te Mihi Power Station, Taupo and Dairy Factory in Darfield. DSI also dispatched to Rarotonga a 80 ton crawler, 180 ton crawler, plus piling equipment for another McConnell Dowell wharf project.
With the busy Christchurch rebuild, works starting to generate a lot of sheet pile and foundation project work. DSI have invested in 2 x NEW ICE (44-B and 22-30) vibro's.

DSI now have dedicated earthquake response teams in operation with cranes, excavators, transport, generators, fresh water delivery services in full swing. Our personnel are on 2 x 12 hour shifts / 24 hour day operation.
The DSI Manitowoc 110 ton crawler crane is at Christchurch Cathedral recovery operation. DSI Hyundai excavators 5 to 50 ton (10 of) with steel jaws, shears, concrete crushers and grapples are assisting with recovery work - removing falling verandas, canopies and walls to gain access into building for USR to complete search and rescue operations.
Personnel are rotated and getting rest. Our thanks goes out to volunteers helping provide food and drinks to our hard working men - it is much appreciated and valued.

Daniel Smith Industries report that all staff and their immediate families are accounted for.
DSI equipment and buildings are okay, although have incurred some damage to 'site' contract works on Christchurch Ferrymead Bridge.
Personnel with cranes, excavators, trucks, generators and water tanks are busily involved with emergency response works and we have equipment at Christchurch Cathedral and the CBD area and eastern suburbs.
